March Hares
2023
One day while teaching Kindergarten, we wished for a class pet and then pulled him out of an old black top hat and named him Abracadabra. He was all white with pink eyes. He rode in my lap to and from school everyday. He lived with us for more than 12 years. I loved watching him hop around, eat, sleep, shake his ears. I used to fill my sketchbook with drawings of him.
Painting rabbits is calming for me. Sometimes, I paint them to take a break from the abstract pieces on which I usually focus. Many of these works are new, but some were begun a while ago and just recently finished. Using my old sketches for reference, I enjoy expressing the humor and personality of these rabbits through the compositions and their body language, imagining what they might be feeling, thinking, or saying. To be “mad as a march hare” is used to describe someone acting odd, unpredictable, and maybe even silly as rabbits often do in the month of March!
